Eiffel Tower
How to capture an icon? That's the perennial problem for a travel photographer. Something we've seen a thousand times, yet newly seen - that's ideal. But since we've seen it so many times, the mind jumps to a pre-seen image. We know exactly what the Eiffel Tower looks like because we've seen it in clichés so often. So to spend time with the subject, hours, night after night, trying to sense something distincitive, and then bring to it a certain particular style of seeing, that is the art of travel photography. The market has an insatiable appetite for the same subjects, newly seen, and those are the most difficult challenges of all.

Parthenon
What does it take to be a photographer? Some say that with the new digital equipment, "Anyone can take great photos now. All you have to do is point and shoot. The camera does the rest."
Knowing that I wanted a key image of the Parthenon at night for a feature story on Athens, I climbed from the Plaka over the Acropolis Hill and across to Filopapou Hill well before sunset to scope out locations and the light. It was a 45 minute hike each way with camera gear and tripod. The shots weren't great, the light iffy, and the angle wrong. I went back the next day before dawn, after a late late dinner and a couple of hours sleep. Even though the light was nice the direction was off and the Acropolis against the morning sky uninspiring. One nice shot that morning was the Filopappos monument. That evening again I traipsed across town to my lookout spot, but clouds came in and the evening just lacked something. No shot.
It was the fourth attempt that finally gave what I wanted [above]. A wind had cleared out the pollution, the night sky was clear and crisp and I'd found another vantage point, lower on the hill, below the monument. One of the challenges had been to screen out the ugly construction equipment and scaffolding, and this angle of view worked, along with the deep indigo sky. The vertical image too was a nice cover shot.
Much of travel photography is about being in the right place at the right time, about going back again and again and again, about not being satisfied with mediocre results, and above all about caring enough to walk across Athens as many times as it took to get what I envisioned. Any Joe or Jane with a digital camera just won't take the time.

Flamenco
The fiery energy of Flamenco, the story, the song, the guitar, the dance, the palmas, the emotion, all comes alive each year at the annual Flamenco Festival de Jerez in Andalucia, Southern Spain
Late night in the small venues, the passion of the dance excites the tightly packed crowd. The atmosphere is electric and the cry of the singer, and tap of the dancer's heels brings the emotion to a fever pitch. Dedicated performers, they are a joy to watch and hear.

Chelsea Flower Show
The annnual Royal Horticultural Society flower show in Chelsea is a sea of color and a rush of crowds. Hand-crafted gardens, carefully prepared over a year's time, range from tiny pocket gardens to elegant show gardens with expensive corporate sponsorship. The flowers are exquisite and cottages and pavilions seem as if they have been there for years.

whisky
Ireland is proud of her whisky - triple distilled, single-malt and finer than the finest Scotch, they say. A tour of the three distilleries in the Republic of Ireland and the North - Midleton in Cork, Jamesons in Dublin and Bushmills in County Antrim, takes one through centuries of history, from quiet countrysides inns to hip and busy Dublin.

Prague
Prague is a magical city, moody, reawakening. Cobble streets, Gucci fashion, rumbling streetcars, tourists and fine classical symphonies. The bustle and romance of staid this old continental capital emerging into the rush of modern Western European life makes for a rich experience for the visitor - and a wide range of subjects for the photographer

Athens
Greece is a favorite for photographers because of the crisp light and the liveliness and enthusiasm of Greek culture. Athens in springtime is vivid with flowers, cafes, music and stil the ongoing appreciation of ancient culture.

EUMEX
Last week I attended the EUMEX European tourist board gathering in Los Angeles. Representatives from many of the national tourist boards were there along with regions and cities including Oslo, London and Manchester.
New portfolios of European subjects include:
Several destinations look promising for 2006 stories.
Bouzouki
Wandering back from the Acropolis on an Easter Saturday while shooting as story on Athens, I happened upon a small outdoor restaurant in Macrygianni where they were roasting a whole lamb on a spit outside. Since it was before the big Easter feast and they were still preparing the meals there was lots of time to focus on details of the restaurant and people. When this musician sat down to play lively tunes on the traditional Greek bouzouki I chose to concentrate on his hands and strumming and to allow a little blur to show the energy of the movement and music.

wreath
In preparation for the midsummer festival on the longest day of the year, a traditional Swedish custom for young women is to craft a flowered wreath from local wildflowers. The celebration of life, fruitfulness and vitality comes alive with the brilliantly colored blossoms. To focus on the flowers and the model's eyes, I chose to crop in tight in a horizontal which matches her direct gaze and invites the viewer's' response.

Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest in Munich is this month and brings lots of energy and enthusiasm, colorful parades, carnival rides, good food and music and of course a visual feast for photographers. During a traditional concert as part of the kickoff celebrations, I was eager to get close in to this tuba player to get a sense of his concentration. Covering the festival for an American magazine my aim was to find small details to give more personal points of contact amidst the high energy of the huge crowds who thronged the Munich fairgrounds.

Aquavit
At the Grinda Wardshus, on the island of Grinda in the Stockholm Archipelago, the potent Swedish liqour aquavit is daily fare. Although aquavit is clear and colorless, the colorful reflections of the table in the bottle, along with the diagonal treatment, give a strong flair and sense of flavour and excitement.

Swedish Cuisine
West Sweden is becoming well-known for fine restaurants such as Fond in Goteborg and Salt and Sill in Klädesholmen, part of a gourmet trail known as the Vastsvensk Mersmak which ranges from Goteborg north along the coast to the Norwegian border.

Stone walls
Driving through the lush Irish countryside, I was struck by the simplicity and energy of the stone walls. There is an earthy contrast between the rough-hewn gray stones, the deep green of the pastures and the white wooled grazing sheep.
The walls enclose the land, define boundaries between neighbors, and protect the sheep from wandering off.
Climbing carefully on a wall on the narrow verge of a country lane, I composed the image to crop closely, eliminating the sky and letting the walls partition the image into geometric segments. The single wall leads the eye into the distance, while the two sheep lying in the field counterbalance and keep the viewer in the picture.

Spirits of Scotland

Haunted castles in Scotland was the subject of this Endless Vacation magazine assignment.
Many of the Scottish castles are known for their apparitions, spirits who linger and occasionally return to surprise the inhabitants; the Grey Lady of Fyvie and the beaded ghost of Glamis are but a few. None showed up during my photo sessions, but the expectation was all the fun.

Prague Rain
It was a dull and a rainy afternoon and my journey to the historic town of Kutna Hora outside of Prague had been a bust. No blue sky, no photographs. Returning to Prague and stuck in traffic I was drawn to the raindrops on the windshield, and started shooting through the drops on the glass, changing focus, trying different angles. As I drove around town looking for mood subjects, this wet bicyclist passed on the cobble streets of Mala Strana- Old Town.

Czech Republic
Images from Prague and the Czech Republic are finally up on the site. It was quite a trip. The city is bustling, full of tourists and enthusiasm, and upbeat in an encouraging way. The last time I visited was years, years ago - what a change.
Cesky Krumlov is another medieval delight, almost storybook, in Southern Bohemia. A UNESCO World Heritage site and definitely worth a day or two of wanderings.

Prague
I have just arrived in Prague for two weeks. Photographing this wonderful Bohemian city and the Southern town of Ceske Krumlov will be a great pleasure. For the first time I shall try to post occasional images as they are produced. This is the red tile rooftop of the church of Saint Jakub.
ireland
This Spring I photographed a story on the Irish Whiskey Trail, covering Dublin, Cork and Antrim. The story will run in Endless Vacation later this year.
Ireland is new for me. Born British, but never before had I crossed the Irish Sea!
