Almost 1500 years ago Buddhist monks carved the 27 meter statue of Maitreya Buddha in the sandstone walls of Bingling Grottoes. It’s well worth the three hour boat journey up the Yellow River. Closeups didn’t show the scale of the figure, so I framed horizontally with a wide lens from across the gorge. The tiny monks’ quarters and rickety ladders contrast with the serenity of the Buddha figure.
